What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

By Brent Jagodnik, Founder, Full Throttle Performance Solutions

Short answer

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website, content, and brand signals so AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews can understand your business and cite or recommend it when someone asks a relevant question.

How AEO differs from SEO

Traditional SEO aims to rank a page in a list of blue links. AEO aims to be included in a single generated answer. The searcher may never click a results page, so the goal is to be named, quoted, or linked inside the answer itself.

SEO and AEO share foundations: crawlable pages, fast load times, clear headings, and trustworthy content. AEO adds a stronger focus on direct answers, entity clarity, structured data, and being mentioned by sources AI tools already trust.

What AEO work includes

Answer-first content that responds to real buyer questions in the first two sentences, then supports the answer with detail and examples.

Structured data (schema markup) for your organization, people, services, FAQs, and articles so machines can read who you are and what you offer.

Consistent entity signals: the same business name, description, contact details, and founder information across your site, LinkedIn, directories, and partner pages.

Crawler access for AI bots in robots.txt, plus a plain-language summary file (llms.txt) that tells AI assistants what your business does.

Example

A Shopify brand selling performance suspension parts wants to appear when a shopper asks an AI tool for the best lift kit for a specific truck. AEO work would add a clear comparison page, product schema, fitment FAQs, and earn mentions on enthusiast forums and review sites the AI already cites.

Common questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO. Strong technical SEO is still the foundation AI tools rely on to find and trust your pages.

Who needs AEO?

Any business whose buyers research with AI assistants: e-commerce and DTC brands, B2B services, and consultancies where trust and recommendations drive the sale.
