How Is AI Search Visibility Measured?
By Brent Jagodnik, Founder, Full Throttle Performance Solutions
Short answer
AI search visibility is measured by running a fixed set of buyer-intent prompts across AI assistants on a regular schedule and tracking how often your brand is mentioned, cited as a source, and recommended over competitors, then connecting that to referral traffic and inquiries from AI tools.
The core metrics
Mention rate: the percentage of tracked prompts where your brand is named in the answer.
Citation rate: how often your own pages are linked as a source.
Share of voice: your mentions compared with the competitors that appear for the same prompts.
Sentiment and accuracy: whether the AI describes your business correctly and positively.
Business impact: sessions referred from AI tools (for example chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai in analytics), plus booked calls and leads from those sessions.
How to run a benchmark
Write 15 to 20 prompts a real buyer would ask, mixing broad questions and specific ones. Run each prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Record the date, tool, whether you appeared, which sources were cited, and which competitors were named.
Keep conditions consistent: same prompts, logged-out or fresh sessions, and the same location where possible. Repeat every 30 days so changes reflect your work, not random variation.
Turning measurement into action
Prompts where competitors appear and you do not show you where to publish content or earn mentions. Pages that start getting cited are the ones to expand and link to from the rest of your site.
Common questions
Is there a single AI visibility score?
Not an industry standard one. A useful score combines mention rate, citation rate, and share of voice from a consistent prompt set.
Can I see AI traffic in Google Analytics?
Yes. Referral sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and gemini.google.com show up in GA4, and you can group them into an AI channel.
